The hosel that never had a sleeve
Plenty of Gulf bags still carry heads whose shaft simply sits in a blind bore. No adapter, no notches, no wrench. Those joints fail in quieter ways: a slow turn, a ferrule that walks, a tip that was short from the last pull.
Measure first
Insertion is a number, not a vibe
We mark how deep the old tip sat, then look at whether the wall is still parallel. A bellied bore from too many hot pulls will not hold a new stem no matter how expensive the epoxy is. That is a recut or a polite no — same as an oval sleeve wall.
Graphite tips get a different heat story than steel. We do not scorch a tip to “save time” on a Thursday. If the old film will not release cleanly, the head stays until it will.

Mal recuts if there is meat. If a previous shop already reamed it thin, we stop. A tip-in with no wall is not a candidate for a secret through-drill in Suite 4.
Do not convert it for fashion
Turning a healthy tip-in into a homemade through-bore is how garage disasters start. We will not do that because a forum said it “plays more connected.”
